I am Charles Hardin, LPC, providing counseling in Birmingham, AL. I work with adults who are living with the effects of trauma, shame, and chronic self blame, often beneath the surface of capable, high functioning lives. Many of the people I work with feel exhausted from holding it all together and confused about why life still feels so heavy.

Even when life looks “normal” on the outside. You may find yourself exhausted from holding it all together, anxious in stillness, or caught in a cycle of self-criticism and guilt.

My Approach

My approach is trauma informed, collaborative, and paced to your nervous system. We focus on helping you feel more in control, understand your emotional responses, and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Together, we explore the roots of shame and guilt while building compassion, safety, and steadiness in the present. Trauma therapy is not about forcing positive thinking or reliving everything that happened. It is about creating safety, both emotionally and physically, so your system can begin to settle. In counseling, we slow things down. We listen to what your anxiety, numbness, or self criticism has been trying to protect you from.

Healing does not mean forgetting the past. It means no longer living as if it is still happening. I help you learn how to be with yourself without being overwhelmed by shame or self criticism. I help your nervous system learn that peace is not something you have to earn.
